Best time to post on Instagram for restaurants: what the data says
RestoPhoto Team · October 22, 2026 · 6 min read

There is no single best hour to post on Instagram. Sprout Social's 2026 data puts food and beverage accounts at their best on weekdays, in windows that start at 11 a.m. Buffer's analysis of 9.6 million posts ranks Thursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at 12 p.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m. highest. Both studies use local time. For a restaurant, post one or two hours before your busiest service, then check the result in your own Insights.
What two large studies found
Sprout Social and Buffer measured engagement by hour and by day. Their best hours differ, but both list them in the local time of the audience. Noon in a study means noon in Chicago or in Austin.
| Day | Sprout Social: food and beverage accounts | Buffer: all accounts |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. | 7 p.m., then 6 p.m. or 8 p.m. |
| Tuesday | 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. | 7 p.m., then 3 p.m. or 5 p.m. |
| Wednesday | 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. | 12 p.m., then 6 p.m. or 8 a.m. |
| Thursday | 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. | 9 a.m., then 8 a.m. or 7 a.m. |
| Friday | 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. | 10 p.m., then 9 p.m. or 6 a.m. (weak day) |
| Saturday | Lowest (weekend) | 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. or 8 p.m. (weak day) |
| Sunday | Lowest (weekend) | 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. or 8 p.m. |
Sprout Social analyzed nearly 2 billion engagements on about 307,000 profiles, from November 27, 2025 to February 27, 2026. Buffer analyzed 9.6 million Instagram posts from January 2024 to December 2025. It ranked each slot by median engagement rate.
The two studies differ on the hour. On days, they share one verdict: Saturday is weak in both. Sprout ranks Saturday and Sunday lowest, while Buffer's weakest days are Friday and Saturday. Buffer also notes that afternoon slots tend to do better in hospitality.

Post before your guests decide
Likes do not fill a dining room. A lunch post has to reach people before they choose where to eat.
- Lunch: post around 11 a.m. Sprout's food and beverage windows start at that hour.
- Dinner: post between 3 and 5 p.m., while people plan the evening.
- Weekend brunch: post on Thursday or Friday before 1 p.m. Both studies rank Saturday low.
- Bar and late kitchen: post in the early evening. Buffer's best Monday and Tuesday slot is 7 p.m.
These slots come from meal times, not from a measurement. Your own numbers decide.
Find your own best time in Insights
Instagram's advice to creators is short: post "when your audience is awake and most active", and "use your insights to understand their habits".
Instagram for Creators: frequently asked questions
Follower activity data comes with business and creator accounts. Meta's developer documentation says it is not available on accounts with fewer than 100 followers.
Open Insights in the Instagram app and check when your followers are active. Put those hours next to the busiest hours in your POS data.

Test two slots for four weeks
- Find your two busiest services in your POS or reservation data.
- Choose two posting slots, A and B: one from the studies, one an hour before a busy service.
- Post three times a week at slot A for two weeks.
- Then post at slot B for the next two weeks.
- Show the same kind of photo in both periods, for example plated mains.
- Check each post after three days: reach, saves, shares, profile visits and link taps.
- Keep the slot with the better results. Test again when your opening hours or the season change.
Compare posts of the same kind, so the hour is the only thing that changes. A burger photo and a dessert photo can pull very different numbers at the same hour.
How often a restaurant should post on Instagram
Buffer recommends 3 to 5 Instagram posts a week plus 1 to 2 Stories a day. Instagram's creator FAQ says that regular feed posts help you engage with your audience. It adds that this engagement can boost the distribution of your content.
Choose a number your kitchen can keep for three months. Plan the week ahead, so each post has a dish and a time slot.

Keep a stock of finished photos
The best posting hour rarely matches the minute a dish leaves the pass. Photograph four or five dishes on a quiet afternoon. Finish them in one sitting, then post at your chosen hours all week.
RestoPhoto starts from a phone photo of your real dish. In the Studio, pick Insta Post (4:5) for the feed or Insta Story (9:16) for Stories. A finished photo takes 1 to 3 minutes, on the web, on iOS or on Android.

The dish stays yours. What changes is the light, the backdrop and the framing. AI can still change small details of a dish, and some styles add props around the plate, so compare the result with your original before you publish.
